In "Kaleidoscope," six men drift towards outer space and certain death after their spaceship blows apart.
This episode was adapted from the 1949 short story by Ray Bradbury, which can be found in The Illustrated Man, his 1951 collection of stories .
As the episode opens, a spaceship carrying a cargo of lumber is on a routine voyage, when suddenly, there is a mechanical failure! The order to abandon ship is given, but the crew can do little more than get into their spacesuits before the ship explodes.
Now, the survivors are adrift in space without jet packs to propel them. They can't see each other but they can speak through a telephonic connection in their spacesuits. Each one now faces his own fate...
"Kaleidoscope" was adapted for radio, produced and directed by Antony Ellis. William Conrad starred. Also appearing were Parley Baer, John Dehner, Sam Edwards, Georgia Ellis, Jonathan Ellis, Stacy Harris, and Howard McNear. This episode aired on July 12, 1955.
